Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has made history by unofficially breaking Doug Gilmour's OHL point-streak record.

The Toronto Maple Leafs top prospect unofficially broke the record with his goal against the Oshawa Generals on Friday, December 6th, 2024. Cowan extended his point streak to 56 games. The record is unofficial because the streak takes place over two seasons.

Doug Gilmour's streak saw him register points in 55 straight games with the Cornwall Royals during the 1982-83 season. Cowan has 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points in 20 games this season. (Stats from eliteprospects.com)

However, the record-setting night came at a cost for Cowan. Later in the game, Cowan was injured after a huge hit by Oshawa Generals defenseman Zackary Sandhu. Both players seemed to be shaken up on the play, and blood could be seen on the ice after the collision, leaving doubt about the status of both players moving forward.

The injury occurred when Sandhu attempted to deliver an open-ice hit on Cowan as the Leafs prospect came up the middle of the ice. The result was a massive collision between the two. Although it looked like Sandhu was coming in for a clean hit, by going shoulder to body, both men appeared to bump heads during the contact, which would explain the scary result.

Hockey Canada announced Monday that Easton Cowan will attend Canada’s World Juniors selection camp but will not participate due to precautionary reasons. Cowan is expected to be one of Team Canada's top contributors at the 2025 World Junior Championship. He registered a goal and two points in five games at last year’s tournament.

Cowan was named to Team Canada's selection camp roster on Monday, December 2nd, and was among 32 players selected to compete for a spot on Team Canada's roster for the 2025 World Junior Championship tournament, which begins on Dec. 26th in Ottawa, Ontario.

Hopefully, the injury Cowan sustained from the hit on Friday night is not too serious and he will be ready to represent Team Canada in two weeks. Meanwhile, Beckett Sennecke has been added to Canada’s selection camp roster as an insurance policy.

Sennecke stars for the Oshawa Generals and was selected third overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2024 NHL Draft. He has recorded 21 goals and 44 points in 26 games with Oshawa this season.
