The Toronto Maple Leafs fell 4-1 to the New York Rangers on Saturday night, but it was essentially a 2-1 game before the empty-netters.

Add that one to their undeserved loss to the Montreal Canadiens in the first game of the season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs could easily be 5-0.

But they aren't. They are 3-2, with both losses coming in regulation, so their record looks pretty pedestrian.

Chris Tanev is off to a great start with the Leafs and so is Anthony Stolarz. The new coach is having some growing pains as he re-tries all the things Sheldon Keefe eventually abandoned, and its a work in progress, but he seems fine.

As for the standings, let's check them out. (from NHL.com).

Toronto Maple Leafs + NHL Standings Update - the first of the year

The Atlantic Division is expectedly tight early on - the Panthers are off to a great start and have an early lead. They are the expected Division champs.

The Leafs are in a three-way tie with six points, as Tampa and Ottawa have similar records to date. The Habs and Sabres, who have played seven games, are just one point back, while the Wings are in the basement with a 2-3 record. The Atlantic is obviously strong, but the Sabres are 2-5 and look like a joke again.

The Winnipeg Jets, who have only played four times, are the NHL's last undefeated team. Dallas and New Jersey are the only teams with five wins, but the Devils have played eight times.

The Stars, Rangers and Utah are all notably off to great starts in 2024-25.

The biggest surprises this year so far are all in the Eastern Conference. The Oilers are 2-4 and off to a brutal start that likely won't last. The Avalanche, who don't seem to employ a goalie, are off to an even worse 1-4 start and find themselves sandwhiched between Philly and San Jose in the standings.

The NHL's worst team so far is the Nashville Predators who are 0-5. They made the playoffs last year by going on an insane run that then made their management overrate their team, which led to all kinds of ill-advised investments in older players this summer.

The Predators better pick it up or they could find themselves all but eliminated from playoff contention by Halloween. As for the Leafs, they are off to a good start but one would like to see them actually win games in which they are the better team.
