Expect the Toronto Maple Leafs GM to Make His First Trade Any Time Now

The Toronto Maple Leafs roster is not ready for the upcoming NHL season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs need either a star third-line centre or another impact winger. They also need to clear out the likes of David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok and Ryan Reaves for the cap space to make it happen.

Add in the fact that the team's current GM has been on the job for over a year and hasn't yet made a real trade, and it's clear the Leafs are going to do something before the season starts.

It would be ridiculous to enter the season as-is.

Expect the Toronto Maple Leafs GM to Make His First Trade Any Time Now

Since becomeing the Leafs GM after the team made the wrong decision when Kyle Dubas tried for Brendan Shanahan's job, Brad Treliving has struggled to improve upon the gifts his predecessor left behind for him.

A recent survey by the Athletic ranked the Leafs managment as 30th in the NHL, which, as I am sure you well know, a 32 team league.

That is pathetic and clearly Brad Treliving is on the hot seat. It's not entirely his fault, but he has been more or less terrible as GM so far.

However, he can always redeem himself with his first big trade, assuming he makes one.

When Brad Treliving was the GM of the Calgary Flames he made the terrible trade that sent Matt Tkachuk to Florida in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weeegar and appears scared to make another one.

In his time in Toronto he has yet to make a major trade.

Treliving has made several minor trades (most of them ill-advised). He traded for Ilya Lyubushkin, Joel Edmundson and Connor Dewar which cost the Leafs a 3rd, 4th and a 6th round pick.

He traded for Chris Tanev in exchange for a 7th round pick. He gave up future considerations for Cade Weber.

Other than that, his only trades were at the draft to move down and recoup picks.

But it has been about 15 months without a major trade. Either he's due to make one or the Leafs will continue to be a safe, boring and poorly run team until they fail again next May and Treliving is replaced in an act of mercy.

Since it's impossible for me to believe someone whose job is on the line would enter the season with this current roster, or go down without at least taking a big swing, I predict the Toronto Maple Leafs will swing a big before the season starts.
