For many years, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been criticized for not being tough on the ice.

One complaint that hasn’t been made is that the Toronto Maple Leafs lack spice.

Well, the Buds are about to bring a new level of heat to the rink as they’re re-imagined as hot peppers. It’s the next in the series of recognizing the adaptive ability of the Leafs.

To catch up, read about who the Leafs would be if they were Disney Princesses or if the team was the cast of 90s sitcom, Seinfeld.

Those who enjoy heat on their tongues will tell you that there’s a lot in common between the capsaicin filled fruits and the the Toronto Maple Leafs. Put on your protective gloves and let’s dig deep.

The Toronto Maple Leafs As Hot Peppers

Carolina Reapers

The Carolina reaper is the world’s spiciest pepper. The only person in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization that fits this description is their president, Brendan Shanahan. While he may have been working behind the scenes for years, his playing days were outrageous. He brought a new level of heat to the NHL.

Jalapeno Peppers

Mark Giordano, the Toronto Maple Leafs veteran defender, would be like a classic jalapeno pepper. He’s a staple of the NHL with a large body of work that packs a punch. Giordano has been consistent throughout his career. He has a fiery energy that elevates his game and motivates his teammates. He’s also been a captain for two different franchises. Just like a jalapeno, Giordano has a simple yet bold flavor that can bring a burst of heat to any game.

Ghost Peppers

Mitch Marner, with his dynamic and electrifying playing style, would be like a ghost pepper. He forces his opponents running for their water. Along with his playmaking, Marner is known for his speed and is always pushing the pace of the game. Just like a ghost pepper, Marner has extremely intense heat that can leave a lasting impression and raise the stakes of the game.

Habanero Peppers

Pierre Engvall, with his tenacity and drive, would be like a habanero pepper, a red hot force to be reckoned with. Engvall is a player who never gives up on a play. He has a fiery passion that makes him the perfect fit for a habanero, which is known for its big heat and bold flavor.

Chipotle Peppers

Timothy Liljegren has become a steady presence on the Leafs’ blue line. He would be like a chipotle pepper, a classic flavor with a smoky kick. Liljegren has come into his own as a reliable player who provides consistency on the ice and a solid presence in the defensive zone. He has a quiet strength that makes him the perfect fit for a chipotle. Whether he’s blocking shots or breaking up plays, Liljegren brings the heat.

Scotch Bonnet Peppers

Calle Jarnkrok would be like a Scotch bonnet pepper. He never backs down from a challenge and fits in anywhere. The tasty pepper is popular in West African and Caribbean cuisine and is used in many dishes. Jarnkrok isn’t the toughest guy on the ice, but has a physicality that makes him the perfect fit for a Scotch bonnet.

Cayenne Peppers

The  Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending tandem, would be like a cayenne peppers. They bring balanced heat to the game. While Matt Murray has been shaky as of late (and mostly injured), Ilya Samsonov has brought a calm and composed demeanor, providing a steady presence in net. Together, the goalies are ideal connections for the cayenne. With their abilities to make exciting saves, they can heat up a crowd in an instant.

Hot Pepper Seeds

The seedlings aren’t quite ready to be consumed as peppers. This fits well with the Maple Leafs prized prospect, Matthew Knies. He may one day be the spiciest of all, but that day isn’t today.

Pay close attention to the Leafs the next time they take the ice. If you look close enough, you’ll see small fiery streaks that follow the players around the rink.
