Puppa only played eight games with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was selected by the Florida Panther in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft.  As recent expansion franchises, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks were allowed to pick a player from each of the newest franchises, the Florida Panthers and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Tampa Bay used their picks to select Daren Puppa and Glenn Healy (Healy was traded to the New York Rangers for a 3rd round pick the same day).  Ottawa took defenseman, Dennis Vial from the Ducks and San Jose passed on both picks.

Daren Puppa immediately took over the net and remains one of the greatest goaltenders in Lightning history.  Only Andrei Vasilevsky (229), Ben Bishop (131) and Nikolai Khabibulin (83) have more wins (77) than Puppa in a Lightning jersey.
