It is no secret that the Toronto Maple Leafs have a team that can score goals.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have last season’s top goal scorer Auston Matthews. He is again leading the NHL in scoring and looking for his second straight Rocket Richard Trophy.
Toronto’s offense doesn’t stop with Matthews though, the team as a whole is scoring like crazy as of late. In their last six games, Toronto has scored 36 goals. That is five or more goals per game over a six-game span.
During this recent six-game scoring frenzy, Toronto has a record of 5-0-1. They’ve earned 11 out of a possible 12 points and find themselves in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Maple Leafs played divisional rivals in four of those six games and picked up seven out of eight points.
With only 12 games left in the regular season, every point earned becomes more meaningful. Toronto is eight points behind the first-place Florida Panthers but only three points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins.
If the Maple Leafs can continue to score at their current pace, they will win the majority of their remaining 12 games. Toronto has three crucial divisional games left in its schedule. They have one more game against Tampa Bay, Florida, and Boston.
Toronto Maple Leafs Have Many Offensive Threats
Leading the way for the Toronto Maple Leafs is Auston Matthews. He leads the team with 54 goals and 41 assists for 95 points in 65 games. The team’s leading scorer has 12 points in his last five games. Matthews seems to be scoring at will right now.
Next on the list in team scoring is Mitch Marner. He has 31 goals and 57 assists for 88 points in 61 games. Marner has 14 points in his last five games. This is Marner’s first season scoring 30 or more goals. It will likely be his sixth straight season leading Toronto in assists.
Currently sitting third in team scoring is team Captain John Tavares. Many have claimed that Tavares is slowing down or is washed up. I don’t know how you can say that about a guy with 25 goals and 42 assists for 67 points in 69 games. He has been close to a point-per-game player since he joined Toronto in 2018.
After those three players, the Toronto Maple Leafs have William Nylander (66 points) and Morgan Rielly (60 points) rounding out their top five. Close behind them is Michael Bunting, with 55 points in his first full NHL season. Toronto will finish the season.
The fact that Toronto will have a player with 100 or more points for the first time since 1994 is crazy. Knowing that they might end up with two players reaching 100 points is even crazier. On top of that, they could have six players with over 70 points by the end of the season. With just 12 games left, it is time for fans to sit back and enjoy the ride.
