EDMONTON, ALBERTA – AUGUST 07: Matt Dumba #24 of the Minnesota Wild raises his fist during the national anthem prior to Game Four of the Western Conference Qualification Round against the Vancouver Canucks prior to the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Rogers Place on August 07, 2020 in Edmonton, Alberta. #3. Matt Dumba

I’ve written about this a few times now, but Dumba to Toronto is a no-brainer in my opinion. After the Jonas Brodin signing, that gets closer to becoming a reality everyday.

It was only two seasons ago that Dumba finished ninth among all NHL defenseman in Point Shares. That season, Dumba scored 14 goals and had 50 points, while playing almost 24 minutes per night. Stuck on a terrible Minnesota Wild team, Dumba hasn’t been able to shine like he would in a market like Toronto.

Currently making $6M per season, Dumba has a reasonable contract until he becomes an UFA in 2023. In order for the Leafs to afford him, they would have to trade a roster player or two, a prospect and most likely a draft pick to clear space but the team desperately needs a right-handed defenseman.

Unless he’s troubled by injuries, I can’t see a scenario where bringing in Dumba doesn’t make this team significantly better, so the Leafs should seriously consider making a trade with the Wild to acquire him.
