The Toronto Maple Leafs called up Alex Steeves this week, who has been tearing up the American Hockey League (AHL) all season.
With 29 goals in 40 games, Steeves leads the AHL in goals and is also, third in league scoring. Although that's quite the accomplishment, there's no guarantee that success will continue at the NHL level, however, he's a well-deserved call up.
It's funny that the media has been screaming about the Leafs need to acquire a third-line centre when they could have one this entire time. Steeves' 29-goal season thus far isn't a fluke, as he's been doing this for three years now. As the Toronto Marlies career leader in points, Steeves already has two 20-goal seasons in the AHL.
The one reason why we haven't looked at Steeves as the next man up, is because of his age. At 25 years old, Steeves is now in his fourth season in the AHL, which is usually longer than most great NHL prospects stay. However, it's tough to crack the Leafs line-up when their forwards have been very good over that time, but Steeves has been playing way too well not to be given an opportunity.
Steeves reminds me of a cross between Bobby McMann and Adam Brooks. He fits the McMann comparison because of his older age and can be compared to Brooks because of the size and position he plays. Brooks was also a 20-goal scorer in the AHL but never became a full-time NHLer, finishing with 11 goals in his 43-game career before heading to Europe.
Steeves Called Up To Leafs
However, this could be another example, such as McMann's. When the Leafs called up McMann, there was some expectations on him because he had scored 21 goals in 30 AHL games, but many thought he'd be sent down in a week. However, since that call-up last season, he hasn't looked back and has been a consistent winger and contributor for the Leafs.
If the Leafs want to give Steeves his best opportunity to succeed, he needs to play with an NHL centre on a scoring line. Though this was written ahead of last night's game, it was submitted before it happened. Steeves was scheduled to play on the fourth line with David Kampf, which is a huge mistake.
Based on Steeves' skillset, he needs to play with a great scoring winger such as Nylander or Marner, or a centre like Matthews or Tavares, instead of the fourth line.
Personally, I don't think Steeves is going to come in and light the world on fire, but based on his current demeanor, nothing would surprise me. During his media availabilities, he's been very humble and patient all season, which I think is a big reason why he's been successful, thus far.
Calling up Steeves is a great idea right now and I hope he can take full advantage of the opportunity because he deserves it. It would be nice, however, if the Leafs gave him a real and honsest chance to succeed instead of sticking him in Ryan Reaves spot with David Kampf.
