Cap Casualties:

The "cap casualties" are players who for one reason or another may be moved to help the Leafs make the cap work. This can be either in cap dump moves or by adding one of these players into a deal to keep the team cap compliant.

David Kampf, C, 30, 3yrs x $2.4M AAV

Kampf has been the Leafs fourth line center for four years and despite not being known for his point production, his scoring has seen a fairly harsh decline the last two seasons. His defensive numbers are admittedly great as a whole but he has middling numbers when against elite competition. He carries a $2.4 million caphit per year and it may be worth it to move on from the shutdown center. However, if his perceived value is a net negative around the league, it may make more sense to keep him in the meantime unless they can obtain a clear upgrade without spending a lot of cap dollars or in trade assets.

Max Domi, W/C, 29, 4 yrs x $3.75M AAV

After a very productive year, scoring 47 points in 80 games whilst showing off his versatility, slotting into multiple different roles, Domi earned a four-year extension carrying a $3.75 million AAV. This year has been much more disappointing with only 20 points in 47 games thus far, a pace of 35 points in 82 games.

He has not lived up to his contract so far and if the front office can reallocate his nearly $4 million caphit, they should. The contract is fair but it seems quite clear that even with many players out with injury this year that Domi does not seem to fit the coach as well as the last. Regardless, he should still hold some value around the league so there should be a market out there for him.

Calle Jarnkrok, W, 33, 2yrs x $2.1M AAV/Jani Hakanpaa, RD, 32, 1yr x $1.475M AAV

I lumped both of these players together because they are players who have in Jarnkrok's case not played at all this year or in Hakanpaa's case played very little. Them being in this category is largely dependent on when they are slated to return from injury and whether it is before or after the deadline.

These players will almost surely be considered negative value assets and would likely require a compensatory pick or prospect to make it worth another team's while to take on their contracts. The most likely scenario is that they are out until after the deadline making this a moot point.
