Carson Soucy - Vancouver Canucks
An underrated player that has flown under-the-radar for much of his NHL career, Carson Soucy has been a towering, reliable defenseman that any team would love to have playing for them. He might not light up the scoreboard on a nightly basis, but he can sure makes his presence felt by the opposition while defending. So far, Soucy has registered 87 blocked shots and 83 hits in 55 games played to date.
However, Soucy has struggled at times with the Vancouver Canucks this season after being a huge force for them last year during the playoffs. As a result, he had been healthy-scratched by the team recently and has apparently been made available for trade by the Canucks despite having a full no-trade clause.
A change of scenery could be the perfect antidote to his sticky situation, as moving to a legitimate contender like the Leafs could do wonders in getting his game back on track. More importantly at just 30 years old, Soucy should have plenty of game left in him in the midst of his prime.
David Savard - Montreal Canadiens
A trade target that the Maple Leafs have pursued in the past, David Savard is available once again this season ahead of the trade deadline. Despite being just five points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Canadiens are headed towards the deadline as potential sellers, given there are quite a few teams clustered in front of them around that final playoff spot.
Savard would be that perfect veteran presence that the Leafs always coveted. With the ability to chip in about 20 points a season while being one of the premium shot blockers in the game, the 34-year-old defenseman could provide a significant boost to both their offence and defence at the same time. Despite averaging less than 18 minutes a game this season, Savard has recorded 126 blocked shots already while maintaining a solid 3:1 giveaway-to-takeaway ratio.
More importantly, as a right-handed shot, he would be exactly what the Leafs need to pair with any of their top defenseman. Or what they could even do is slide him in on their bottom pair to make it by far one of the best in the league.
