The Goaltenders
I want to talk about Woll and Stolarz at the same time because I think they're going to benefit from this for similar reasons.
Woll has impressed me this year. He has already played a career high in games and with how he has struggled with injuries early in his career, I was dreading Woll having a heavy workload. Before the season, I wrote about how I was concerned that Stolarz and Woll hadn't played a lot of games in a single season. So far, Woll has done it and performed well.
Through the 30 games played, Woll has posted a 0.909 save percentage, 5.52 goals saved above average and 14.11 goals saved above expected (advanced stats from Evolving-Hockey).
When it comes to Stolarz, I think he could be the biggest surprise of the year. He was putting up an unbelievable performance after unbelievable performance for this team before sustaining his knee injury.
Through 18 games, he posted a 0.929 save percentage, 13.98 goals saved above average and 16.35 goals saved above expected.
Nobody expected Stolarz to perform at this level, and it would be reasonable to expect some sort of regression to arrive, but he has been fantastic.
Injuries were concerns for both guys heading into the year, and they have both dealt with them this season. This break is going to allow both guys to get healthy and regroup. I'm excited to see both of these guys try to keep their fantastic season going.
