The Case for John Tavares to Remain Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs

John Tavares should be the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs as long as he is on the team. His understated leadership doesn't get the credit it deserves.

The question of whether John Tavares should remain captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been discussed this offseason.

Mainly, this question has gained traction as a possible explanation for the Toronto Maple Leafs playoff shortcomings.

While it’s true that the Leafs have underachieved during Tavares’ tenure, it’s unfair to pinpoint Tavares’ role as captain as a significant cause of said shortcomings. The Leafs’ lack of playoff success is a complex issue that goes beyond who’s wearing the “C.”

So, I’d like to argue the case why John Tavares should remain captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs for next season and beyond.

The Case for John Tavares to Remain as Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs

He’s Been a Classy Leader

Tavares is not a flashy, oud guy who walks around, thumping his chest and yelling at everyone around him. His demeanor has been calm and composed. He doesn’t break sticks when he’s frustrated or start berating referees on blown calls.

John Tavares has been a classic, old-school leader who’s led by example. There are plenty of other flashy players on the team. So, Tavares doesn’t need to be a highlight reel. That’s what Auston Matthews is for. Meanwhile, Tavares is the sort of leader who everyone overlooks because he’s always there.

The best example to underscore this point was how distraught the Leafs looked in game 1 of the Montreal series during the bubble playoffs. Tavares was hurt during the game and missed the rest of the series. The Leafs were so shaken up that the Canadiens walked right over them. While the team got it together afterward, Tavares’ absence left a gaping hole.

Now, I’ll be honest here: I believe that if Tavares hadn’t gotten hurt, the Leafs would have run away with the Canadian division that year. While you could argue that everyone has matured since then, I’ll believe it when Matthews or Mitch Marner single-handedly carry the Leafs to a playoff victory.

His Work Ethic and Professionalism Are Unquestionable

Lots of folks overlook the fact that Tavares was chosen over a very young Auston Matthews as team captain because of his proven work ethic and professionalism. Tavares has set the bar for everyone on the team.

Tavares Is a Respected Player Around the League

This point is short, as there is no need for a long list of examples. The clearest example was Tavares’ recent participation in the World Championships. When Tavares agreed to play for Canada, he instantly became the team captain.

Was there anyone else on that roster that could have made a better claim for the captaincy?

Yes, I get that most Leafs fans are concerned that Tavares will turn into Anders Lee. However, given Tavares’ work ethic, commitment to the club, and professionalism, he should remain captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs as long as he is on the roster.
