Surprising AI-based predictions for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25

An exercise with the AI-based tool ChatGPT revealed some highly interesting and not-so-interesting "predictions" for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25.

Predicting Individual Performances

The last portion of my conversation focused on individual performances. The results don’t seem staggering but do yield some interesting tidbits.

To begin with, the algos predict that Mitch Marner will lead the club in scoring with a point total somewhere between 90 and 100 points if he can stay healthy. That’s the key point. If Marner can stay healthy, there’s no reason to believe he shouldn’t top 100 points.

Then, ChatGPT predicted that Auston Matthews should end the season somewhere between 50 and 60 goals given his track record. The algos predict that “a total in the 50s seems likely.” Given Matthews’ skills and track record, 50 seems like a given.

Now, ChatGPT does point out that Matthews’ goal totals depend on chemistry with linemates and power play success. Both factors cannot be overlooked as questions linger about who could join Matthews and Marner. Moreover, the powerplay stands to get a makeover. Thus, the man advantage could also play a crucial factor in Matthews potentially reaching 70.

It’s also worth pointing out that ChatGPT considers that William Nylander could end up leading the team in goals this upcoming season. While ChatGPT states that Matthews should “comfortably” lead the team in goals, Nylander could have an outside chance.

Finally, I asked ChatGPT one big question: Does Marner re-sign?

ChatGPT rightfully did not provide a definitive answer, but what it did state seemed quite interesting. Here’s what it produced:

“His future with the team will likely be determined by his performance this season and how the team's management views their chances of maintaining a competitive roster while staying within the salary cap.”

It’s interesting to see that ChatGPT feels Marner’s time with the Leafs will boil down to a management decision, not Marner himself choosing to stay or leave. ChatGPT does clarify Marner could test the free-agent market if the Leafs are unwilling to meet his contract demands.

But then again, no crystal ball is needed to see that coming.

Ultimately, these “predictions” are nothing more than algos regurgitating information that’s already out there. Nevertheless, they do make for some interesting talking points, especially when considering that the algos feel the Leafs could finally break through and make a long postseason run.
