An exercise with the AI-based tool ChatGPT revealed some highly interesting and not-so-interesting "predictions" for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25.

Determining Where the Toronto Maple Leafs Will Finish in the Standings and Playoff Success

I then proceeded to ask ChatGPT where the Leafs would finish in the standings. ChatGPT stated that if everything clicked, the Leafs could finish first or second in the Atlantic Division.

But here’s where the prediction gets truly fascinating:

“But if some of their lingering issues, particularly with goaltending or consistency, resurface, they might drop to third place, still likely securing a playoff spot but facing a tougher first-round matchup.”

Again, nothing that we don’t know about. But when digging a little deeper, the elves running ChatGPT’s algos feel that goaltending could be the team’s Achilles heel. Secondly, consistency looks to play a major role in keeping the Leafs afloat in the Atlantic Division.

That’s another interesting point to consider. Berube promises a tough-love approach that preaches hard work and consistency. Could it be that the tough-love keeps the Leafs honest and propels them to win the division?

It’s possible. In fact, that’s a reasonable goal the club could shoot for. Winning the division ensures the Leafs face one of the wildcard teams instead of Boston or Florida.

My next query focused on the playoffs. ChatGPT’s analysis was interesting, to say the least:

“The most optimistic projections suggest the Leafs could make it to the Conference Finals if everything falls into place. However, a second-round exit might be a more conservative and realistic expectation, given their playoff history and the uncertainties surrounding their roster.”

All right, so we’re assuming the Leafs make it to the Conference Final. Moreover, we’re assuming that at least a second-round appearance is in the cards. However, ChatGPT does not discard the possibility of another first-round flop.

What does seem quite interesting is that ChatGPT almost assures the Leafs will make the playoffs. This seems reasonable since they are the NHL's current leader with eight consecutive playoff appearances.

There’s one last reflection with regard to how ChatGPT perceives the Leafs’ playoff prospects:

“If Berube's coaching style can instill the toughness and discipline that the Leafs have lacked in past playoffs, and if players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner elevate their game, the Leafs could make a deep run. This scenario would likely see them at least reaching the Conference Finals and potentially the Stanley Cup Final.”

Once again, we’re assuming that Berube’s impact is enough to get Leafs players to elevate their performances when it matters most. If that’s the case, would a trip to the Stanley Cup Final be out of the question?
