Surprising AI-based predictions for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25

An exercise with the AI-based tool ChatGPT revealed some highly interesting and not-so-interesting "predictions" for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will make the Eastern Conference Final with Mitch Marner leading the club in scoring, notching over 100 points.

These Toronto Maple Leafs predictions, among others, were the result of my interactions with ChatGPT. I decided to test out the sort of analytical and predictive nature of this AI-based tool to see what sort of replies I would get from ChatGPT’s GPT-4 version.

It’s worth pointing out that this version produces much better results than previous incarnations.

As such, the surprising responses to my queries seem as though they had been written by a knowledgeable person.

That being said, I started my interaction by asking: How will the Toronto Maple Leafs 2024-25 season play out?

The response I got was a rehashed textbook response that this season is set to be “a pivotal one,” and “filled with high expectations and significant uncertainties.” Interestingly, the response yielded that postseason performance would determine the Toronto Maple Leafs decision to re-sign Mitch Marner.

Moreover, the response also mentioned that John Tavares remaining in Toronto would hinge on his willingness to take a pay cut.

As for Craig Berube, ChatGPT pointed this out: “Berube is expected to bring a tougher, more disciplined style of play, which could address some of the issues that have plagued the Leafs in past playoff runs.”

Nothing unusual, right? Seems reasonable to suspect that’s the expectation with Berube behind the bench. However, ChatGPT assumes that Berube will apparently solve some of the issues inherited from Sheldon Keefe’s tenure.

Now, the next bit of information surprised me: “In goal, the Leafs are taking a bit of a gamble with Anthony Stolarz as their new starter. Stolarz has shown promise but lacks extensive experience as a full-time starter, which could be a risk if he doesn't perform as hoped.”

All right, so two things. First, when did Anthony Stolarz become the starter? Second, it’s true that Stolarz lacks experience. But no one has ever said that Stolarz would be a gamble as the full-time starter. Does ChatGPT know something we don’t?

With Joseph Woll signing a three-year deal this offseason, all signs point toward the club giving Woll the chance to be the starter. In the worst of cases, Stolarz and Woll could be a solid tandem. The thought of Stolarz becoming the starter is intriguing as it points toward Stolarz potentially winning the starting job in training camp.

The response concluded by stating that if regular-season or playoff success is scant, major changes would be on the horizon. Again, nothing we don’t already know.
