The Toronto Maple Leafs hope to trade Mitch Marner this week.

While there has been an incredible amount of speculation about Mitch Marner getting traded, actual substantiated information about the situation has been hard to come by, as the Toronto Maple Leafs are a notoriously tight-lipped organization.

That changed Wednesday afternoon when Frank Saravalli appeared on the Sportsnet Nick Kypreos show.

"It's not even so much my feelings, it's just good old school reporting," said Frank Saravalli Wednesday afternoon on the Nick Kypreos Show. He continued: "The Toronto Maple Leafs will do everything in their power [to trade Mitch Marner].

That is an absolute bombshell.

Toronto Maple Leafs Aggressively Trying to Trade Mitch Marner

Assuming this is true - and Frank Saravelli is about as reliable a source as there is, since he is the President of the Professional Hockey Writers Association - this is absolutely crazy.

We have known that it was a possibility, but the Leafs haven't said anything and Marner has expressed a desire to stick around.

The Leafs would be trading a future hall of famer who is already 8th in franchise scoring and well on his way to being the all-time highest scoring Toronto Maple Leafs player in history.

The absolutely terrifying levels of failure the franchise had to endure to get to the point of trading their second best all time player at the peak of his abilities, even though any non-emotional person can easily see that he is a great playoff performer and that the team's inability to win with him on the roster has absolutely nothing to do with him, is just bizarre.

For it to have come to this is the epitome of stupid. Honestly, before the Leafs do something they will regret for a generation, someone should step in and put an end to this madness. You don't trade Mitch Marner-level players.

You don't trade future hall of famers, you don't make emotional decisions, and most of all, you don't deal from positions of weakness.

Trading Marner now, when he holds all the cards and can dictate his destination, in a salary cap league, is incredibly stupid. The Leafs will 100% lose the trade. They will 100% have a worse team next season.

There is no possible situation where the Leafs trade Marner and improve. It is impossible.

But somehow they are trying to do it.

Good luck with that.
