The Toronto Maple Leafs have never really stopped working this summer. New general manager John Chayka has been extremely busy, tinkering along the edges or completely rebuilding the Leafs' depth. And the latest move is certanily an intriguing one -- especially since we are in late August and just weeks away from training camp.
Announced by the Toronto Marlies, they have signed a handful of players to AHL-only contracts and among them, is Russian goaltender Timofei Obvintsev, who is more intriguing as somewhat of a mystery prospect than anyone else in the system.

Timofei Obvintsev is the Leafs' mystery prospect
Obvintsev, 21, was selected by the Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft and ever since then, he hasn't really found any footing in whatever league he is in over in Russia.
While he did miss chunks of time due to injury, he has largely just disappeared and never really got a secure job ever since the Leafs drafted him. In the 2024-25 season, he suited up for a total of 11 appearances for the MHL's Krasnaya Armiya Moskva, CSKA Moscow's junior team, where he earned a .908 save percentage -- and that was it. And then last season, for Gornyak-UGMK of the VHL (the Russian second pro division), a team who is based out of a town closer to the Kazakhstan border than anything else, Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Obvintsev earned an .899 save percentage in six total games. Again, that was it.
Obvintsev has just rarely gotten into any actual games due to injury or just because he got outplayed and was thrown down the depth chart. It's unfortunate that he hasn't really had an opportunity to run with it.
At least now, while he is part of a giant group of goaltenders in the Leafs system, there is a clear plan in place and he should get some actual gametime. Artur Akhtyamov will be the Marlies starter -- he brought them a Calder Cup after all -- but the likes of Ken Appleby and Samuel Hlavaj will be competing with Obvintsev for that AHL backup role. And if he doesn't make it, he should get some time down with the ECHL's Cinncinati Cyclones to at least get on the ice and face some shots.
Because of him barely having any playing time, it still feels like there's something else to unlock with Obvintsev. He's just 21 years old and goalies take a while, and he has a reputation as a very athletic but raw netminder. There's something so intriguing about that package.
