Maple Leafs president of sports and entertainment, Keith Pelley, has been in the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons. After the organization fired GM Brad Treliving, Pelley has been talking a lot about the Leafs' future and the organization's plans. During this press conference, Pelley began discussing other teams around the league. Specifically, he said that he did not see the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens having as much success as they did.

Now not seeing the Sabres success is one thing. They have been one of the biggest surprises of the season so far. However, to not know the Canadiens were going to be a contender this season is inexcusable. This has to make you questions how closely Pelley follows the game of hockey and how much does he know about what is going on. These comments helps explain why the Leafs have been such a mess recently, and should raise major concerns about the teams future.

Keith Pelley comments should make Leafs fans very worried

Going into this season, the Canadiens were expected to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. They were coming off a season in which they went 40-31-11, good for 91 points and the last wild-card spot in the East. They also have a very talented young core led by guys like Nick Suzuki, Lane Hudson, and Cole Caufield. So the fact that this team is currently in a playoff spot is not a surprise to any hockey fan.

That's what makes Pelley's comments so concerning. How can you be running a hockey team and not know what teams are going to be contenders going into the season? It's either that Pelley is incompetent or just does not care about hockey. Both of which are extremely concerning for fans. You do not want either of these qualities from the most important person in a hockey organization. This is how things get mismanaged, and teams start to struggle.

How can fans trust Pelley to hire the person as general manager? This is one of the most important decisions in Maple Leafs history. It can be the decision that either helps the team win the Cup or makes it one of the league's worst teams. It is a decision the team can not get wrong, but with Pelley's recent comments, it looks like he will. If he does not know what teams in the league are good, how do you know what candidates are good?

This also explains some of the poor decisions the team has made in the past. Things like firing Kyle Dubas or hiring Treliving in the first place. It's clear that Pelley does not know what it takes to run a hockey team, thus leading to these poor decisions. These comments make it seem as if the "The Core 4" era was always doomed to fail. The team was never able to surround itself with the proper personnel to succeed.

Without question, Pelley comments just made the Maple Leafs one of the biggest jokes in the NHL. Fans should be extremly worried about this GM search and who the next GM is.
