Bowen Byram
Bowen Byran is a 23-year-old left-shooting defenseman who has already won a Stanley Cup (Colorado Avalanche - 2022). He has decent size (6'1, 205 Lbs) and is a former first-round pick of the Avalanche (4th overall) in the 2019 NHL draft. Byram would be a nice addition to the Leafs top four and could fill in on the top pair if needed.
Byram has seven goals and 22 assists for 29 points in 58 games this season. He is averaging a little over 23 minutes a game and has 86 blocked shots. Like Dobson, Byram is a pending RFA at the end of this season, so the Leafs have a chance to acquire a player that they could control for years to come.
Things didn't work out well for Byram in Colorado due to some injuries including a concussion, but he has played well for the Buffalo Sabres this season with a clean bill of health. Adding a defenseman who is 23, can play in your top four, and has already won a Stanley Cup seems like a no-brainer option for Treliving to explore. Byram will cost the Leafs a similar price as Dobson (2026 1st + Top Prospect + Player).
Byram has a salary of $3.85 million this season. In the long run, Byram might be cheaper to re-sign than Dobson. Either way, he would be a nice addition to the Leafs defense for a playoff run. The rest will work itself out in the summer.
