When Auston Matthews scored on Saturday night, it was his 398th career goal, and it put him two ahead of Dave Keon and comfortably into the 112th spot on the all-time NHL scoring list.
Auston Matthews needs just 15 goals to pass Phil Kessel and enter the top 100. From there, it's a long climb to number-one, but he can do it. He's already only 22 goals away from being the Toronto Maple Leafs all-time leading goal scorer, but it's a long way to Ovechkin.
Alex Ovechkin is currently the NHL's all-time goal leader. That's a huge bummer in my opinion.
Auston Matthews poised to give the NHL a goal scoring leader you can respect
Though Gretzky's wife recently penned an embarrassing plea for mercy, the former legend actually watched Ovechkin's record setting game with Kash Patel, the unqualified political appointee of the man trying to prevent you from making a basic living.
To be clear: both Ovechkin and Gretzky are men who are absolute zeros when it comes to character. Unfortunately for them, the importance of "character" is a central part of what makes up a hockey player, and has always been a factor in everything from team building to who fans elevate above other players.
To be clear, I do not care about any player's politics. Public support for fascists, however, goes beyond politics. So what are the odds that the NHL will eventually get a goal scoring leader that the people can love and respect?
Based on his current goals per game number, Auston Matthews has averaged 52 goals every 82 games for his career so far. He needs 497 goals to catch Ovechkin and scores .64 goals per game, which works out to approximately 777 games.
So if Matthews plays for another ten years, bringing him to 37, and he's healthy the entire time, and he never declines, he should set the record sometime in the 2035-36 season.
It is unlikely, to say the least, but it's possible that, ten years from now, the NHL has an all-time goal scoring king that people can respect for his character and decency as a human being.
