Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Ryan Tverberg left the Toronto Marlies game Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Admirals after a dangerous hit and did not return.

There has been no update yet on the Toronto Maple Leafs seventh round pick from the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Midway through the third period with the game tied at two goals apiece, Tverberg found himself along the boards in the neutral zone finishing dumping the puck into the Admirals zone.  At which point career minor league goon Anthony Angello accelerated from approximately 12 feet away blindsiding the Marlies center.

The 6’5″ Angello left the 5’11” Tverberg on the ice at which point the play continued.  The Richmond Hill native was left crawling across the ice to the bench.

Tverberg appeared to be having another strong game as he had a nice setup to open the scoring in the first period on Nick Abruzzese’s first goal of the season.  It was his fourth point in just his fifth game to start his rookie year.

Angello who was a former Pittsburgh Penguins prospect signed a two-way contract with the Nashville Predators has bounced around to three different organizations the last three seasons and has a total of 267 career professional hockey games compared to the 12 games by the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect.

Hockeyfights.com has credited Angello with 13 career minor league fights over the last five seasons and while not much is known of the much bigger player, it appears he took advantage of a younger inexperienced player in a vulnerable position.

As for Tverberg, there has been no update on his injury and coach John Gruden was hoping it would be  minor and the team would get him back soon.

As stated, the Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Tverberg in the 2020 draft out the Ontario Junior “A” hockey league at which point he went to the University of Connecticut for three seasons.  After back-to-back 30-point seasons in the NCAA, he signed his entry level contract with the Maple Leafs last March and played seven regular seasons games down the stretch to finish off the year.

Tverberg looked impressive during the Maple Leafs 2022 prospect camp last July and then again had some impressive plays during the prospect tournament the organization participates in each September.
