Auston Matthews’ recent contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs was the latest, and most significant example of his leadership potential.

Since a misstep earlier in his career, Matthews has continued to evolve. By reaching a new deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs at an opportune time, his continued growth is evident.

With contract negotiations behind him, he can focus solely on preparing for a new season. It also eliminates a potential huge distraction for him and the team.

Most importantly, Matthews showed tremendous leadership by getting this deal done.

Matthews Leadership a Boon For the Toronto Maple Leafs

One particular reflection from general manager Brad Treliving on the Matthews’ extension is eye-catching.

"To me, it was a partnership more than a negotiation and it took some time to find a balance that worked for everybody. He kept coming back to how did (the new deal) fit in the team concept. I applaud him."

By working in a partnership with the organization, Matthews has increased the likelihood of the Leafs being successful.

Matthews temporarily gets designated as having the highest AAV league-wide while he has also left the Toronto Maple Leafs with more wiggle room related to the salary cap.

In finalizing his new deal promptly, he has sent a message to his teammates, the team’s fanbase, and management.

The message might be subtle, but it’s there. Personal agendas need to be set aside.

Matthews had all the leverage during these talks, and he could have decided to drag this out, reach free agency, and maximize his earnings. Treliving stated so himself.

A contract with a $15-16 million AAV was easily attainable in free agency. Instead, Matthews sacrificed some personal earnings for the good of the whole group.

For the Leafs, this could have a positive trickle-down effect in future negotiations with other key members of the roster.

Of course, management and players might use words through the media that have a hidden meaning or might be pushing a personal or team agenda.

In this case, Treliving and Matthews came off as very sincere in their remarks. Matthews is very content to continue his pursuit of a championship with the team that drafted him.

Teammate John Tavares rightfully credited Matthews for his leadership and maturity.

In a team sport, everyone needs to be pulling in the same direction. Matthews has set a precedent for everyone within the organization to follow.

A singular move, his timely contract extension, spoke volumes.

Let’s all make any necessary concessions for the greater good of the team. One giant step forward in leadership from Matthews will be of great benefit to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
