The Toronto Maple Leafs have added former Detroit Red Wings prospect Robert Mastrosimone to the Toronto Marlies roster after signing the NCAA graduate this past weekend.

While technically he isn’t signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the New York native signed an AHL deal with the the Marlies, he becomes a player the franchise can develop.

The Marlies announced via Twitter on Sunday afternoon that Mastrosimone had signed the deal.

The 22-year old was a former second round pick of the Detroit Red Wings from the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.  Selected 54th overall that year, Mastrosimone was taken one pick after current Maple Leafs prospect Nick Robertson.

Heading into the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Mastrosimone played with the Chicago Steel in the USHL finishing second on the team in points behind another Maple Leafs prospect, Nick Abruzzese.

The 5’10” winger played his first three years of collegiate hockey for Boston University where he was part of the 2022 Beanpot Championship team.  This past season, Mastrosimone transferred to Arizona State University where he played with current Toronto Maple Leafs assistant general manager Shane Doan’s son Josh.

Mastrosimone led his Sun Devils hockey team this past season in scoring as he recorded 11 goals and 42 points in 38 games and was one of only a few players to finish with a positive plus/minus on the season.

Sports Forecaster’s scouting report on the Marlies new prospects states that Mastrosimone plays with a ton of energy, has high a high work ethic and is a true leader.  He is great on the back check and a strong penalty killer, projecting to be a two-way forward.

The description sounds a lot like Trevor Moore.

dark. Next. Former Maple Leaf Gets Traded

Mastrosimone joins a crop of very young Toronto Marlies and with the Maple Leafs looking for cheap third and fourth line wingers over the next couple of years he could find himself an opportunity to get an NHL contract.
