3 Former Cup Winners the Toronto Maple Leafs Could Add
The Toronto Maple Leafs face an interesting offseason in the coming months, and many big changes are to be made. One big event every season is free agency, and while this year’s group might not be the best ever, there are still some solid players available.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have many free agents of their own that need to be re-signed, but some big names are available on the open market, including those who have won the Stanley Cup.
Infamously, the Leafs haven’t won a cup in over 50 years, so maybe adding a player or two with winning experience will aid the current roster. Obviously adding a player with winning experience isn’t automatically going to win a team a cup, but it may help.
Here are 3 former Cup winners the Leafs could consider adding this offseason.
3 Former Stanley Cup Winners the Toronto Maple Leafs Could Consider Adding
#1 Alex Killorn
First up on the list is two-time cup champ Alex Killorn. Killorn has been a strong, versatile forward for the Tampa Bay Lightning in his time there and could bring a diverse skill set to the Leafs. Killorn has also put up 59 and 64 points in each of his last 2 seasons with Tampa, not bad at all.
The only real downsides with him are his age, as he is about to turn 34 years old, as well as his footspeed. He’s not slow by any means, but the Leafs might be looking for someone a little faster. Regardless, I am a fan of Killorn’s game and would love him on the team.
#2 Dmitri Orlov
Next up on the list is 2018 Stanley Cup champion, Dmitri Orlov. Orlov has been a very solid top-4 defenseman his entire career, as well as being almost a lock to reach 30+ points every season. That’s solid production for a defenseman, and the Leafs could use another point producer on the back end.
I love Orlov, and he would be a crucial member of the Leafs if they decide to acquire him, but the issue is he will cost a ton. As previously mentioned, this year’s free agency group is a weaker one, and Orlov is looking like one of, if not the best available defenseman on the market this year. On top of that, his strong play with Boston at the end of the season (25 points in 30 games with the team) will increase his value that much more.
If the Leafs can afford him, however, I’ll gladly take him.
#3 Jonathan Toews
Last but not least, perhaps the most likely player on the list for the Leafs to add, is 3-time champion Jonathan Toews. Toews is a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer and one of the greatest players of the 2010s.
Now of course he’s nowhere near that level of play anymore, but he can still be a useful player on the Leafs.
Toews put up a respectable 31 points in 56 games this season, and he would fit in well with the Leafs as a third-line centre.
If the price is right (under $2 million), Toews could be a great addition for the Leaf.
In conclusion, if the Leafs are looking to add some experience this offseason, there are many solid options available.
We’ll see what Brad Treliving’s approach is going to be with his new team.
