Tuesday night was disappointing for Maple Leafs fans and bettors across North America after they fell to the Florida Panthers at home in Game 1 of their second round NHL Playoff series.

But, all is not lost. I’m here to deliver some good news.

Not only are the Maple Leafs far from eliminated, but I actually think the loss gives us some fantastic value when wagering on them to advance to the Eastern Conference Final.

Let’s jump into it.

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers series odds

The Maple Leafs Game 1 loss caused their odds to win the series drop from -165, to +105.

While yes, a Game 1 loss isn’t ideal, it means we can now bet on the Maple Leafs to advance to the next round at plus-money, which I think is a great bet to make.

Allow me to explain why you should tail this wager.

If you look at the start “expected goals”, the Leafs massively outplayed the Panthers in the opening game. They had an expected goals of 4.46 while the Panthers had an expected goals of just 2.47. Toronto also had nine more high-danger scoring chances compared to Florida.

In fact, based on advanced metrics according to Moneypuck.com, the Maple Leafs deserved to win Game 1 65.9% after 1000 simulations.

That’s good news for us Leafs fans and bettors. Also, let’s not forget Toronto lost Game 1 to Tampa Bay in the first round of the playoffs. In fact, only two of eight teams who won their series in the opening round of the playoffs, won Game 1.

With all of that information combined, we can feel confident in betting on the Maple Leafs to win the series against the Panthers at +105. We just need to hope that Sergei Bobrovsky doesn’t continue to look like the version of himself that won the Vezina Trophy six years ago.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
