Toronto Maple Leafs Fans Chant “Perry Sucks” in Game 2 Win
The Toronto Maple Leafs were more engaged in game two of their best-of-seven series with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Game two had everything from fights to hat tricks and everything in between.
After losing 7-3 in game one, the focus was on the Toronto Maple Leafs to see how they would respond. They responded quickly and often to win game two 7-2. Fans had lots to cheer about and were loud all game long. Toronto forward Mitch Marner scored a power-play goal 47 seconds into the game, and Toronto never looked back.
Toronto goaltender Ilya Samsonov got pulled in game one after allowing six goals. He was much better in game two and will need to stay on top of his game if Toronto is to win this series. The Lightning will try to rebound and make a statement on home ice for game three on Saturday. If the Maple Leafs play with the same effort as they did in game two, they’ll be fine.
Leafs fans brought so much energy into the building, and you know the players feed off of that. With games three and four in Tampa, the Leafs will want to keep the building as quiet as possible. The Toronto Maple Leafs need to keep their foot on the gas in this series. If there is one thing they should have learned from their series with Tampa last year, it’s that you can’t allow Tampa the chance to get back in the series.
Toronto Maple Leafs Game 2 Highlights
Win or lose, the main focus from fans and media is on how well the core of this Toronto Maple Leafs team is performing. The pressure is justifiable, considering how much money these players are making. A team’s top players need to lead by example. Their top players did just that in game two.
Morgan Rielly finished the game with four assists which ties the Toronto Maple Leafs record for most playoff assists in one game.
John Tavares scored three goals for his first career playoff hat-trick. Mitch Marner recorded two goals and an assist for three points. He is now tied with New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox for the 2023 NHL playoffs points lead with six points. William Nylander picked up a goal and an assist, and Auston Matthews recorded two assists.
Everyone knew this series would be physical, and the players have not disappointed. There were 94 combined hits in game two. 53 hits from the Lightning and 41 from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Fans also got treated to three fights in game two. In the first period, Mark Giordano went toe to toe with Zach Bogosian. Then near the middle of the third period Luke Schenn and Tanner Jeannot landed a few haymakers on each other.
Lastly, fans witnessed Justin Holl tussle with Corey Perry. Holl and Perry went to the penalty boxes but were told to head to the dressing rooms. While Perry was skating off the ice, the Toronto fans serenaded him with PERRY SUCKS chants. It was music to my ears. These two teams will battle it out again in game three on Saturday.
