Toronto Maple Leafs Should Stand Pat Regardless of Playoff Results
Whether the Toronto Maple Leafs get swept in the First Round or win the Stanley Cup, the team should not change anything they’re doing.
With another playoff-berth, the Toronto Maple Leafs are now tied with the Boston Bruins for the most consecutive seasons (seven) making the playoffs. Not too shabby for a franchise who’s the laughing-stock of the NHL, eh?
That statistic should show you everything about where this team is. However, people continue to overlook the regular season success and focus on the playoff failure. I can understand the reasoning for that, but isn’t it harder to make the playoffs in an 82 game season every year compared to winning one playoff round?
Any goaltender can get hot in a seven-game series and win a playoff round, but in order to make the playoffs, a lot has to go right over the span of six months. Even if you have a team with Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin, you’re not guaranteed a playoff-berth, so Toronto’s consistency has been very impressive over the past seven years.
Also, their consistency to lose in seven games every year is also impressive…
Toronto Maple Leafs Should Stay the Course Regardless of Outcome
Even if the Toronto Maple Leafs lose in the First Round this year, they should bring everyone back.
The Leafs records book go back to 1917 when the team was named the Toronto Arenas. Since then, they’ve played 105 seasons and have won 13 Stanley Cup’s. With so much history, the past three seasons have been three of the best four seasons in franchise history.
With Kyle Dubas and Sheldon Keefe in-charge, the Leafs have never been a better team, so why would we want to change anything if the playoff results don’t go as planned? I know that playoff hockey is a different style than regular season, but it’s not a different sport.
At one point, that regular season success is going to have to translate to playoff wins because it feels impossible for it not to.
If you look at every playoff series they’ve lost, it’s not like they’ve looked lost. They’ve been one win away from winning every playoff series, except the Washington Capitals series, which they lost in six games with five games going to overtime.
This team has been one bounce away from winning every playoff series they’ve played and have been literally one win, or sometimes, one goal away.
The fact that this has continued to happen isn’t the coaches, management or even all of the players fault, but instead is a series of bad luck that will have to stop sooner than later.
Maybe I’m the crazy one but I’d rather take my chances with Kyle Dubas, Sheldon Keefe, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner than anyone else right now.
This current group of individuals have given us three of the best Toronto Maple Leafs regular season team’s in 100 years, so let’s enjoy the ride because the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
