Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner are close to reaching milestones.
With five games remaining in the 2022-23 regular season, time is starting to run out for the Toronto Maple Leafs superstars to achieve the milestones this season.
The two players have already achieved a few milestones and set new franchise records, and they will continue to do so if they remain with the team long-term.
Which they most likely will.
Toronto Maple Leafs Superstars to Set Team Records
On Tuesday night, Matthews scored the 297th goal of his career, moving him past George Armstrong and Frank Mahovlich for sole possession of sixth place on the Toronto Maple Leafs all-time goals list.
Matthews needs to score three goals to reach career goal number 300. If he reaches 300 goals by the end of this season, he will become the second-fastest active player to reach that milestone. He has currently played in 477 games. (Stats from hockey-reference.com)
Matthews will have scored 300 goals faster than Steven Stamkos (550 games), Connor McDavid (563 games), Sidney Crosby (622 games), and Leon Draisaitl (630 games).
The only active player who scored 300 goals faster than Matthews is Alexander Ovechkin (476 games). Hopefully, Matthews can score three more times in Toronto’s remaining five games to achieve the milestone.
He and Ovechkin will be the only active players to score 300 goals in under 500 games.
Last season, Mitch Marner scored 97 points. With 95 points and five games remaining, will Marner reach 100 points in a season for the first time in his career? The only reason he hasn’t so far are due to injuries and Covid.
If he does, he will become the fourth player in franchise history to do so. Last season, Matthews became the third player to do it, so it would be fitting for his linemate to become the fourth.
Darryl Sittler became the first to record 100 points in Toronto Maple Leafs’ history. He achieved the milestone during the 1975-76 season by recording 100 points in 79 games.
Sittler would record a career-best 117 points in the 1977-78 season. Doug Gilmour recorded 127 points in his first full season with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1992-93 season. That season point total is still the highest in franchise history. Though that year was also one of the highest scoring seasons in NHL history. He also recorded 111 points during the 1993-94 season.
Hopefully, Matthews can score goal number 300 before the season ends, and Marner can register his first 100-point season. Together with the rest of this year’s team, they will try to become the first Toronto Maple Leafs team to make it past the first round of the NHL playoffs since 2004.
