The Toronto Maple Leafs have a few promising prospects in their system. One of these prospects is Ty Voit from the Sarnia Sting in the OHL.
Ty Voit was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL draft with the 153rd overall pick.
There were a lot of unknowns with Voit when he got drafted. Due to covid, he did not play a single game in his draft year.
Any team looking to draft him had to assess him by his 2019-20 season. During that season, he had eight goals and 20 assists for 28 points in 49 games as an OHL rookie. (Stats from eliteprospects.com)
Toronto Maple Leafs Prospect Ty Voit
Fast-forward to his season after the draft, and it looks like Toronto stole a gem of a player in the fifth round. Voit’s 2021-22 season with the Sting saw him register 26 goals and 54 assists for 80 points in 67 games. People were now taking notice of Voit and his potential to be an NHL star someday.
For those who hadn’t heard of Ty Voit before this season, they sure know his name now. The 19-year-old has registered 22 goals and 79 assists for 101 points in 65 games. He is currently second in OHL points this season behind Matthew Maggio (107 points). Voit is projected to finish the season with 106 points in 68 games.
Voit is nearing the end of his OHL career and getting ready to turn pro. The soon-to-be 20-year-old (June 10th) will play with the Toronto Marlies next season in the AHL.
He is under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs until the end of the 2024-25 season. When his entry-level contract is up, Voit will be a restricted free agent (RFA).
Should Voit adjust to playing in the AHL as well as he did in the OHL, it will not be long before people start talking about his NHL potential.
Toronto Maple Leafs fans will get a good view of Voit in September when he takes part in rookie camp and training camp. When the AHL season starts, he will be one of the key pieces to the Marlies’ success next season.
The Leafs have a solid prospect pool with players like Voit, Matthew Knies, Topi Niemela, Ryan Tverberg, and Fraser Minten. Tverberg and Niemela are joining the Toronto Marlies for the remainder of this season and playoffs. Knies will possibly join the Leafs as soon as his NCAA season is over. Whether he will play in the playoffs remains unknown.
