There has been recent speculation about the Maple Leafs going out after a third-string goalie as insurance with names like Cam Talbot coming to the forefront.  Although it is just three games, Joseph Woll has proven he can be that insurance goaltender.

Woll made his third start of the season for the Maple Leafs on Thursday night and turned away 25 of 26 shots to lead the club to a rebound win after one of their worst performances the night before in Edmonton.  The 24-year-old has now stopped 90 of 96 shots in his three appearances this season for a .938 Save Percentage with the big club.

Since making his debut during the 2021-22 season, Woll has posted a 5-2-0 record with a 2.45 GAA and .922 Save Percentage.  This is a very small sample size, but this is a goalie that has always been highly regarded dating back to his climb through Boston College.

The Toronto Maple Leafs already have the goalies needed for 2023

This season, the Missouri native also made his first AHL All-Star debut early this season as he posted a 2.32 GAA and .931 save percentage while picking up wins in 14 of 15 games with the Marlies.

Along with rumours regarding Talbot, other top goalies on the market are James Reimer and John Gibson, the question has to be asked, are any of these goalies an upgrade on Woll?  If so, is it so much that you are willing to part with an asset to acquire it?

Cam Talbot – 2.88 GAA / .905 Save Percentage
James Reimer – 3.35 GAA / .892 Save Percentage
John Gibson – 3.94 GAA / .902 Save Percentage
Joseph Woll – 2.04 GAA / .922 Save Percentage

There have been recent rumours that the Maple Leafs could see Matt Murray back in net during their Saturday game in Vancouver.  You would like to rely on the two-time Stanley Cup champion to stay healthy and lead the team through a deep playoff run, but you can’t go into the playoffs without some insurance. The solution may not be in the trade market, but might be already wearing #60 for the club.  Woll has proven that he is just as capable if not more reliable than any goalie the club could bring in.
