The All-Star break is upon us. That means it’s a great time to put a spotlight on the Toronto Maple Leafs biggest all-star. Surprisingly, this isn’t one of the team’s on-ice talents, but a man who wears a suit throughout the game.

This season, the Toronto Maple Leafs true top star is their general manager, Kyle Dubas. He has been with the  organization since 2014, working his way up to his current position.

Dubas has played a crucial role in shaping the team’s direction and strategy.

The 37-year-old is now in his final year of his contract. Team President, Brendan Shanahan and the organization have not indicated their plans for the future of the general manager role or if they anticipate whether it will continue to be filled by Dubas. While it appears that Dubas’ time with the Leafs is tied to playoff success, it shouldn’t be considering what has already been accomplished.

Toronto Maple Leafs Need to Sign Kyle Dubas Now

There are a number of reasons why Dubas deserves a contract extension. One of the main reasons is his track record of success. Dubas has consistently demonstrated his ability to identify and acquire talented players, both through the draft and free agency. He has also shown a willingness to make bold moves and tough decisions when necessary.

One of the most difficult thing a general manager must do is trading away popular players or allowing them to leave without return. This includes allowing Zach Hyman and Jack Campbell to sign with the Edmonton Oilers, avoiding the high ticket costs it would have taken to retain their services. Fans also saw this when Dubas moved Kasperi Kapanen for cap relief, prospects, and a first round pick.

Dubas truly is an all-star. He deserves a contract extension having shown his commitment to building a winning culture. He has emphasized the importance of player development and has worked hard to create a positive, supportive environment for the team. It cannot be overstated how significant it was when he replaced the Leafs toxic former coach Mike Babacock, who refused to change his ways. Sheldon Keefe has helped build a positive change to the culture in Toronto.

Dubas has also demonstrated strong leadership skills. He has earned the trust of the team’s ownership and management, which is the consistent messaging they’ve shared with the media. It’s also been proven by allowing Dubas to make trades and acquire big ticket free agents. The Leafs GM has a clear vision for the future of the franchise, and he has the experience and knowledge to execute on that vision.

Dubas truly is the Toronto Maple Leafs biggest all-star. It would be wise for the organization to stop waiting for the post season to do their evaluation of the position. Dubas should be extended today.

Ultimately, whether or not Dubas returns next year will depend on the team’s ownership and management and their assessment of the team’s direction and future prospects. While some believe that a change is needed, others recognize that Dubas should be given more time to continue building the team and chasing the Stanley Cup.
