Toronto Maple Leafs: Connor Bedard Passes Eric Lindros
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had many players on their roster over the years who have had memorable moments playing for their countries on the world stage. Whether it be the Olympics, World Cup, or the World Juniors Championship.
For Team Canada, the current Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares knows what it feels like to find success at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Tavares helped Team Canada win back-to-back gold medals in 2008 and 2009. During the 2009 tournament, Tavares recorded 15 points in six games. (Stats from eliteprospects.com)
Another player who had a ton of success playing for Team Canada was former Toronto player Eric Lindros.
Between 1990-1992, Lindros registered 31 points to hold the Canadian World Juniors’ all-time point record. Lindros’ record would survive for 30 years but has finally been broken. Lindros tweeted a message to Bedard to not only break the record but to smash it.
Team Canada’s Connor Bedard broke the record with his first-period goal for Team Canada on Monday night against Slovakia. He then picked up another point with his overtime goal that secured Team Canada’s place in this year’s World Juniors semi-finals. Canada will play the United States next.
Breaking Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni’s Record Only the Beginning
Connor Bedard is looking to be the first overall selection in the 2023 NHL entry draft.
Looking at his stats this season with the Regina Pats in the WHL, it is easy to see why. Bedard currently has 27 goals and 37 assists for 64 points in 28 games.
He registered 100 points in 62 games last season and is projected to record 135 points this season. Once this season is over, Bedard will start focusing on his NHL career. (Stats from hockey-reference.com)
Toronto Maple Leafs alumni Eric Lindros put up some impressive numbers during his NHL career.
The native of London, Ontario, registered 372 goals and 493 assists for 865 points in 760 games. It will take Bedard a while before he passes Lindros in those stats. First, Bedard needs to get drafted, and that will happen in June.
The NHL team with the worst record by the end of the season has the best odds of drafting first overall, but first, they have to win the draft lottery.
As of right now, the Chicago Blackhawks have the best odds, followed by the Anaheim Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets. Whether it is one of those three teams or another team, whoever drafts Connor Bedard is getting a franchise player they can build around.
