The Toronto Maple Leaf are gearing up for a weekend back-to-back vs Pittsburgh and Vancouver.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently ranked 12th with 17 points, while the Penguins are 24th with 12.

Usually you’d expect them to be a top team, but there seems to be a generational player available in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, so of course Pittsburgh will have to be bad this year in order to draft him, like they do most generational players.

The Canucks are 26th and overdue for a rebuild.  Four points should be a slam-dunk for the Leafs, but when is that ever the case?  The game preview is here, let’s jump into the news.

Toronto Maple Leafs and NHL News

The big news today is that Zach Werenski is out for the season. This is terrible news for the Blue Jackets, but just the NHL in general because Werenski was having a great season.

My hockey pool team will never be the same!

In Leafs News, Matt Murray might be back tomorrow, while Ilya Samsonov’s injury may not be as terrible as first feared.

The return of Matt Murray is hard to get excited about.  This guy could still prove to be the 2 x Stanley Cup winner of days past, but then again, I’ve recently become a huge fan of Ilya Samsonov and it’s hard to see him as the back up at this point.

And Erik Kallgren?  This guy has been great this past week but I don’t really trust him….yet.

To be honest, if the injuries so far have earned Kallgren some trust, and given the Leafs a real third goalie option they might have been worth it.  I was secretly hoping for the NHL debut of Keith Petruzzelli, but I suppose that will have to wait.

In other news, Leafs prospect Ty Voit is leading the OHL in scoring with 30 points in 16 games.  The Leafs got him in the 5th round, but it was in the Covid Draft where hardly anyone played the year before, and hardly anyone saw anyone play if they did in fact get to play some.

All drafts are a crapshoot, but 2021 draft even more than usual. I suspect as time goes on we’ll see lots of weird things like 5th round superstars, 1st round busts etc.  Of course they happen every year, but likely more frequently for this draft.

Finally, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be honoring legend Borje Salming at this weekend’s game.  Salming is probably the best Leafs defenseman since the NHL expanded beyond 6 teams, and is definitely one of their all-time best players.
