The Toronto Maple Leafs may have struck gold while mining the deeper rounds of the NHL draft.

One of the Toronto Maple Leafs top prospects, a 5th round selection from 2021, is currently tied for the OHL’s league lead in points.

Ty Voit (19) has 14 points in 8 games for the OHL’s Sarnia Sting.  He shares the league lead with New York Rangers prospect, Brennan Othmann (Flint Firebirds), and Anaheim Ducks prospect, Pavel Mintyukov (Saginaw Spirit). (Stats from eliteprospects.com)

While Othmann (16th Overall) and Mintyukov (10th Overall) are both 1st round picks, Voit was selected 153rd overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

This is a great pickup for the Leafs especially considering they only selected three times during the 2021 draft.

Last season, Ty Voit put up 80 points in 67 games to rank him 19th in the OHL.  Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Voit sat out for the entire 2020-21 season despite it being his NHL draft year.

The Leafs gambled by drafting a player who sat out the season before the draft, but it looks like the risk may pay a high reward.

Another Toronto Maple Leafs prospect is leading the USHL in goals and is tied for second in points.

Nick Moldenhauer, who was drafted by the Leafs in the 3rd round (95th overall) in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft has scored an astounding 9 goals and 11 points in only 8 games playing with the USHL’s Chicago Steel.

Scoring at over a goal-per-game pace might be impossible to maintain over the course of the season, but he’s nearly doubled the goal-scoring output of the USHL’s next best players so far.

Toronto’s two Russian goaltending prospects are lights-out in the VHL right now.  Vyacheslav Peksa has a .935 SV% and 1.94 GAA in 12 games while Artur Akhtyamov has a .932 SV% and 1.91 GAA in 10 games.

In the NCAA, Veeti Miettinen has 5 points in 4 games while Ryan Tverberg has 5 points in 6 games and Matthew Knies has 3 points in 4 games.

Toronto Marlies Update

The Marlies have only played a couple games so far, but they have had a few standout players in those couple games.

Alex Steeves has 2 goals and 3 points in 2 games, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev has 2 points in 2 games and Adam Gaudette scored a goal in his only game so far.  Nick Robertson had a goal and an assist in his two games before getting called up to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
