Toronto Maple Leafs: All-Time Assist Leaders 2022 Update
The Toronto Maple Leafs set a whole bunch of team records last season.
Auston Matthews scored a team high 60 goals, and the Toronto Maple Leafs themselves had more wins and points then they ever had before. It was a great season, but one that, once again, failed to provide any playoff success.
Mitch Marner’s 62 assists were not a Leafs record, but they were the sixth highest total in team history (Marner had 68 in 2018-19 and that ranks 4th).
The single-season assists record belongs to Doug Gilmour, who had 95 back in the 92-93 season. For perspective on that, Sidney Crosby’s career high in assists is 84, and Connor McDavid’s is 79.
Last week we talked about the all-time Toronto Maple Leafs goals list, and this week we are back to run down the team leaders in assists. (Stat for this article from quanthockey.com).
Toronto Maple Leafs All-Time Assist Leaders
The Leafs all-time leader in career assists is none other than the greatest defenseman in the history of the franchise, Borje Salming.
Recently diagnosed with ALS, Salming is one of the best people and players to ever pull on the Leafs jersey, and his record of 650 assists is safe from Mitch Marner for a few more years, at least.
Marner, who leads all active Leafs in assists, is 10th on the all-time list, with 317. If he and Matthews continue to play together, and if they both play a full 82, I think Marner could easily challenge Gilmour’s single season record. As long as he re-signs in Toronto, he’s more or less guaranteed to eventually take the title from Salming too.
Marner is just 303 assists back of Salming, but has played 672 less games and is still just 25 years-old.
100 assists this upcoming season would tie Marner with George Armstrong in 6th place. Though that is unlikely, he should easily pass Gilmour, Kennedy and Horton to move into 7th.
Morgan Rielly, who is only 13 assists behind Marner, will also move up this coming season. Currently 14th, he needs just 46 assists to pass Horton for 7th, though by they it will likely be 8th due to Marner.
Rounding out the active players who rank highly, Nylander is 29th and Matthews 32nd.
They should both move into the top 20 by the end of next season.
Interestingly, John Tavares is 55th all-time, even though you don’t really think of him as being here that long, he’s been in almost 300 games. No other active Leafs player ranks in the franchise’s top 100.
