The Toronto Maple Leafs need to sign PK Subban.

The fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t signed PK Subban yet is a mystery.

The team could use another right-handed defenseman, so who better to sign than the man from Toronto?

At 6-feet-tall, 210 pounds, the right-handed defenseman and former Norris Trophy winner is available. The 33-year-old has a lot left in the tank and after a few years away from the glamor in New Jersey, he needs to come home.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Need to Sign PK Subban

It’s no secret that the Leafs have interest in Subban. Well, at least they used to.

Prior to getting traded to New Jersey, the Leafs had called on Subban, as per TSN’s Pierre LeBrun:

"“Leafs tried on Subban but no way they would have ever taken on the full contract for obvious reasons. They would have wanted him as a $6M player I think. Was important to Nashville to shed the entire deal.”"

As a current UFA, Subban isn’t going to fetch $9M anymore, but instead, you’d have to think you could get him for somewhere between $2-4M.

Subban at one point in his career, was the most marketable player in the NHL, but that went away when he left for Nashville.

When he was winning a Norris Trophy with the Montreal Canadiens, Subban was electrifying. He had one of the hardest slap-shot in the NHL but would also use his body to hit you in the corner on the same shift. He lacked some defensive abilities, which stopped him from being a core piece on Team Canada’s Olympic team, but overall, he was an unbelievable player that the Canadiens fan-base loved.

After 834 career games, Subban has yet to win a Stanley Cup and could be one of the missing pieces that help Toronto get there. Even if they don’t win a championship with him on the team, Subban’s career would be rejuvenated by playing in front of friends and family every night.

Sure, the Leafs do have nine current NHL defensmen, and they are over the salary cap.  Those things will be worked out before the season starts, and should not be an impediment in signing he hometown former superstar.

The Toronto Maple Leafs better do whatever they can to make sure that Subban is a member of their team before training camp because if they don’t take a chance on him, they’re making a big mistake.
