The Toronto Maple Leafs set several franchise records in 2021-22.
Though playoff success continued to allude the Toronto Maple Leafs they set records for wins and points this past season.
The Leafs ultimately finished 4th overall, coming second in the Atlantic, but earning a team record 54 wins and 115 points.
Driving this extremely successful regular season were the 60 goal scoring Auston Matthews, as well as Mitch Marner who has now flirted with 100 points (prorated at times) in each of the last four NHL regular seasons.
For fun, let us check out how Marner, Matthews and others are faring on the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise goal scoring list, courtesy of quanthockey.com.
Toronto Maple Leafs Franchise Scoring
Auston Matthews is going to eventually lead the Leafs in goals and points, but for now, those records continue to belong to the previous greatest player in franchise history, Mats Sundin.
Sundin’s 420 goals with the Leafs are a record, for now. Matthews currently has 259 career goals, 161 goals off the pace. That should be doable in the next three or four seasons, but what is nuts is that because of Covid and injuries, Matthews has already missed the equivalent of one full season in his career.
Matthews has averaged .636 goals per game in his career, and he’s missed 85 games, meaning that, if he had never missed a game, he would have another 54 goals. That would put him only 107 goals away from the all-time lead of an Original Six franchise at the age of 24.
Crazy.
The fact that Matthews is 9th all-time, in just six seasons, is incredible on its own. Matthews needs just one goal to pass Wendel Clark and take over 8th place.
Another 41 goals, which he’ll score by next year’s all-star game (most likely) will help him pass George Armstrong, Frank Mahovlich and Rick Vaive for 5th place.
A 73 goal season – which is not outside the realm of possibility – would put Auston Matthews into 4th place on the Toronto Maple Leafs all-time goal scoring list.
The next highest active player on the Leafs goal scoring list is Mitch Marner, who, though he is not known for his goals, actually scored at a 53 goal pace after returning from injury in January of last season.
A 50 goal season – not impossible – would surprisingly rocket Marner into the top 15. A 40 goal season will put him into Phil Kessel territory, though in more games than Phil played.
With 12 more career games played than Marner, Nylander is only one goal back and currently ranks 32nd all time.
John Tavares is 42nd, meaning there are four active players in the franchise’s top 50 all-time goal scorers.
The next highest ranked active player is Morgan Rielly at 84.
