Toronto Maple Leafs Legend Tie Domi was a part of the dais for The Roast of Ric Flair this weekend. Those that watched, wished he wasn’t.

It’s usually fun to see athletes doing things outside of their sport. Toronto Maple Leafs of the past have a long history of it. Whether it’s Zach Hyman authoring children’s books, Wendel Clark opening a chain of restaurants, Tim Horton starting a used car dealership, Gary Roberts running high performance training, or Shayne Corson and Darcy Tucker starting a hockey apparel brand, there’s no shortage of examples.

However, as former NHL enforcer Tie Domi proved, one thing to avoid is roasting others.

Over the weekend, Max Domi’s father was in Nashville, TN to take the stage for the Roast of Ric Flair. He, along with a number of comedians and wrestlers honored the longtime wrestling icon “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. It was a part of the festivities that took place as a part of Flair’s retirement match.

During his set, Domi shared that it was his first time doing a roast and that he was personally invited by Flair. He admitted that the jokes he was about to recite to the crowd were written by someone else. He then went on to slowly read them off a paper while sharing his opinions on each quip, making it clear that he had done little to no preparation for the event.

This didn’t get past the comedians who took turns taking jabs at a man who made a living throwing haymakers at opponents. John Moses started his time on stage by addressing Domi. He implied Domi’s performance may have been hindered by his former profession “Did you ever block any of those punches?” Moses asked, “He’s retired though. The only thing Tie Domi fights now is to get his big head through a t-shirt.”

Many on the dais turned their attention to the size of the hockey player’s head. Domi himself even used his dome for fodder. He said, “At 73, for Flair to go back in the ring; he must have some kind of ego. Clearly, I’m the last guy in the room who should be calling out anyone for having a big head. I was born on November first, second, and third.”

Domi shared that he is a fan of both Flair and his wrestling. He explained that he used to watch the matches live in Toronto when he was younger at Maple Leaf Gardens. Perhaps that is why he was offered the opportunity to tell jokes. However, after his performance, it may have been an event Domi would have been better suited to join as a member of the audience.

dark. Next. A Trade Leafs Should Make With Nashville

While roasting may not be Domi’s strength, he’s still one of the best to ever drop his mitts in the NHL. Few were ever able to talk with their hands the way he did.
