The Toronto Maple Leafs had both of their weekend games (against Vancouver and Seattle) postponed due to Covid.

Following yesterday’s announcement that the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Cancuks would not go ahead as scheduled, the Leafs announced several more players, and their head coach, Sheldon Keefe,  had been placed in the NHL’s Covid protocol.

The Leafs are scheduled to play the Blues on Thursday, and then the Jackets and Penguins before New Years.

Although no announcement has yet been made, I would figure that those games will also be postponed.

Around the NHL

With the Leafs off, I was forced into viewing a terrible game between the Flyers and the Senators. The Flyers won 4-3, which was lame, but the Senators gave a pretty good battle.  They’re actually a fun team to watch, and the game wasn’t even that bad, I just didn’t care at all about the outcome.

The NHL ultimately got four games in yesterday vs five that were cancelled. I had a nice 9-1 lead heading into Saturday in my hockey pool, but with nearly my entire team decimated, I lost several categories and I won’t get my goalie starts.

I could have been in first place too!

In other NHL games, Carolina beat the Devils, Detroit beat New Jersey, Dallas beat Chicago, and Edmonton beat Seattle.

One observation I have is that it’s pretty weird how all the interesting games got postponed but the dud games all went ahead as scheduled.  Of the games that were played, only the Oilers were really worth caring about.

The cancelled games however featured a) the Leafs, b) Lightning vs Avalanche, and c) Florida vs Minnesota.

All three premium games were postponed.

As for today, the NHL will try to get a few more games in for some reason. As of right now, four are cancelled and four are good to go.

According to ESPN, the NHL is going to go ahead postponing games on a case-by-case basis until the Christmas break on Thursday.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs are in fact done for 2021, they will finish the year with a 20-8-2 record, tied in points with the defending back-to-back Champs, the Tampa Bay Lightning, who are tied with the Leafs on the basis of losing two more games in overtime.

Tampa also has a game in hand.  The Leafs are only a single point back of Carolina and Washington whose puck-luck has been nuts and who are currently tied for first overall in the NHL, despite neither team being as good as their record indicates they might be.
