The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off a weird – but entertaining – game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs ultimately got the job done, but it wasn’t their best game.

They will look to get back on track against the Oilers tomorrow as they embark on a four game road swing that will see them also play their first ever game against he Seattle Kraken.

Unfortunately, the game against Calgary has been postponed. More on that below in our weekly NHL recap.

The Oilers Go Cold

The Oilers have lost five straight, and are free falling from the top of the standings.  This should be of no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention.  The Oilers – with Draisaitl and McDavid – are automatic contenders if the rest of their roster is at all competent.

And while they’ve got some nice pieces, their roster after the Big Two is pretty crappy.  I wrote several times last summer about how they had one of the worst off-seasons in NHL history, but how, given the star-driven nature of the NHL, it wouldn’t matter too much.

For a while the Oilers had a 40% power-play and the best team in hockey.  The Oilers are still fractionally ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the best PP in hockey (31%) but it’s down 25% from it’s peak.

Personally, if I was running the Oilers I’d trade everything I had for a top goalie.  Mike Smith is, at best, OK. This is just common sense.  Easier said than done maybe, but an obvious necessity.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will play the Oilers tomorrow.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Calgary Flames Postponed

The Calgary Flames are the latest NHL team to postpone games due to Covid.  The Flames were supposed to play four times this week, including a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.

This is a drag, obviously, but some good news that comes out of is this: for the first time since October, the Toronto Maple Leafs will have three days off in a row after their game against the Oilers tomorrow.

NHL Injury Update

This isn’t exactly great news for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but it is for NHL fans in general – Lightning star Braydon Point is back skating and should return to the lineup.  We are somewhat surprised that he isn’t sitting out until the playoffs in order to game the system for cap space, but maybe it’s only Kucherov they do that with!

The NHL is really dumb about injury news, so who knows why Point hasn’t been playing? Maybe he has a gross elbow, or a diseased collar bone? Lacerated forearm? Sore eyebrow? All we know is that it’s an “upper body injury.”

In other NHL injury news, Gabriel Landeskog is out a couple weeks, again, who knows why? One injury we do know about is Ben Bishop, whose injured knee will force him to retire.  Bishop was one of my favorite goalies and helped me many times in fantasy hockey.
