As of 12:01AM today, the Toronto Maple Leafs are now officially the NHL’s biggest loser.

When you think of the Toronto Maple Leafs you don’t typically think of their 13 Stanley Cup championship’s. Instead, you think of how long it’s been since they won their last one.

For the past 54 years, the Leafs have been perennial losers. Whether it was losing with a great team led by Darryl Sittler in the 1970s, Kerry Fraser missing a high-stick in the 1990s or blowing goal/series leads in the 2010s and 2020s, Toronto never seems to win.

Every other team in the city has been able to win within that timeframe. The Toronto Raptors became an NBA franchise 28 years after the Leafs won their last Stanley Cup and they were still able to win a championship prior to the Leafs doing so.

Although that Raptors championship was amazing and probably the coolest Toronto sports moment since the Blue Jays win in 1993, watching a Leafs Stanley Cup victory would blow that win out of the water.

Leafs Are Now the NHL’s Biggest Loser

As of today (July 3, 2021), it’s been 19,786 days since the Leafs last won a championship. That’ll break the previous record held by the New York Rangers who had gone 19,785 days between 1940-1994 without winning a title.

That is so long without winning a title. It’s quite possible that they will break this streak next year and finally bring a championship to Toronto, but at the same time, it seems just as likely that they will lose in the First Round.

Talking about the Leafs not winning a title since 1967 is getting very old. The fact that this team hasn’t even reached a Final since there were only six teams in the league is so bizarre to me. You would have thought that by some magical luck, they could have at least made the dance and found a way to lost then.

However, they continue to lose in the worst way possible.

I know this probably isn’t the type of news you want to read while you’re having your Saturday morning coffee, but it’s just the truth. Unless something drastic happens next year and this team finds lightning in a bottle from April-June, the streak is going to continue.

As of right now and for the near distant future, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the biggest laughing stock of the NHL.
