Free Agents That the Toronto Maple Leafs Will Be Saying Farewell To
The 2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs. We had some good times. There was so much hope. So much promise. So much left to accomplish. So much for that.
As the NHL playoffs continue with two grinding, trapping teams sucking the life out of their more talented opponents and reaping the benefits of a league that inexplicably decides to completely toss out the rule book come playoff time, Toronto Maple Leafs fans are forced to wait another month until free agency arrives and we can all start deluding ourselves into thinking that the Leafs have a chance, again, next year.
We can expect to see some new faces and, with multiple UFA’s on the roster, some notable departures.
Here are the most likely Leafs UFA’s that won’t be returning next year along with a farewell limerick that encapsulates their time in Toronto:
Toronto Maple Leafs UFAs: Farewell to Thee
ZACK HYMAN
Hey what a great season Zach!
We’d love to have you come back
Name a price and we’ll pay
6 million you say?
Need someone to come help you pack?
FREDERICK ANDERSEN
Oh Freddie, in net you were manic
You rarely, if ever, did panic
But oh what a shame
That in each “close-out” game
You turned into Roman Cechmanek
NICK FOLIGNO
“A first rounder?!” they said with a sneer
“For a guy with a dwindling career?”
But you talked the talk
Were ready to rock
……..(At least your dad was good here)
JOE THORNTON
You said “No way San Jose!”
For years you pined for this day
Toronto bound
Signed near your hometown
Maybe shoulda been a Blue Jay?
RILEY NASH
Farewell to you Riley Nash
3rd line C decision was rash
Thought you were a gamer
But only thing lamer
Is Auston Matthew’s moustache
DAVID RITTICH
The Leafs goalie woes were a ___
So in came David Rittich
Four games were played
And a point was made:
Big Dave may be better at Quidditch
BEN HUTTON
What should be said about Hutton?
Um….Nutton…?
WAYNE SIMMONDS
Wayne, expectations were high
A grizzled tough vet, local guy
You scored us a few
Then problems ensued
You needed to make the Habs cry
Oh well. No real big losses there (save for Hyman, who will be tough to replace but absolutely cannot be retained at his apparent asking price) but there will be more than a few holes to fill.
Here are a few potential offseason acquisitions for further viewing.
