Toronto Maple Leafs: Andersen to Marlies but He Should Just Shut It Down
By James Tanner
The Toronto Maple Leafs may be off today, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a slow news day.
In fact, there are at least three interesting Toronto Maple Leafs news items, as well as several NHL hot topics worth exploring.
First, the Leafs: Freddie Andersen is going to play with the Marlies tomorrow (for half a game only) on a conditioning stint. I am glad Andersen is getting back, but this is only going to hurt the team. Even if Campbell gets the net like he deserves to, it’s not going to be easy having the guy whose job he stole just sitting there watching him.
It would be better for everyone if Andersen just shut it down for the rest of the year.
Toronto Maple Leafs and NHL News
In other news, Riley Nash has taken to the ice for the first time since joining the team, which is good, but perhaps not exactly earth shattering. I do wonder, however, if a healthy Nash, who has never played for the Leafs, would get started in a playoff game.
Also, Nick Foligno is day to day.
Given his reputation, this is a bit scary, as I’ve been led to believe that something that keeps Nick Foligno out of the lineup would hospitalize a normal man for a month. To Bill Brasky !
As a fourth bonus piece of news, Stefan Noesen will make his Toronto Maple Leafs debut tomorrow. I’ll be honest with you: I forgot this guy existed. This is what happens when you run away with the division! I’m sure he’ll be wonderful.
In the wider NHL, the League recently announced that their Player Safety Department is changing it’s name to the “Player Safety Department.” Supposedly they decided that since they clearly do not care about player safety, they’d incorporate the quotation marks for accuracy’s sake.
Also, Connor McDavid continues his torrid pace and had two more points last night in his quest for 100. This is a great accomplishment, but all it really does is make me wonder what we might have missed if Matthews didn’t hurt his wrist.
100 points in 56 games is amazing. But 56 goals in 56 games would have been even better.
Matthews is on his second streak of the season scoring 18 goals in 18 games and you can’t even suggest this should earn him the Hart Trophy unless you want to be harassed relentlessly by people whose job, apparently, is thought-policing Twitter.
