Toronto Maple Leafs: Waivers, An Injury, and a Shut-Out
Day 3 of the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp concluded today with a few interesting notes.
The Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe kicked off training camp with the shocking announcement that Joe Thornton would play left wing on the Leafs top line.
While there was no such similar bombshell on Wednesday, the Leafs truncated training camp continued to break news at a reasonable pace, each new tidbit making us more excited for the season’s debut January 13th.
Day three of on-ice workouts brought an injury, a player clearing waivers, and a scrimmage.
Toronto Maple Leafs Camp Notes Day 3
As per Leafs PR via Twitter, the Toronto Maple Leafs held a Blue v. White scrimmage this afternoon. The lines, courtesy of Leafs PR, for each team were as follows:
Team Blue cruised to a 6-0 Victory with Matthews and Marner both scoring a goal on Team Blue’s top line. Could this be an early indication of the chemistry between pass-happy Thornton and the two young superstars?
Marner had said prior to training camp that he would be looking for his shot more this season so Jumbo could have an apple feast this year throwing passes to these two elite players.
Kerfoot was held out of the scrimmage today with Pierre Engvall taking his place between Mikheyev and Hyman. Keefe told the media that Kerfoot is considered to be day to day at this point. Keefe also talked about how important he thinks the line of Mikheyev, Kerfoot and Hyman will be this year for the Leafs.
Denis Malgin cleared waivers today and will remain in Switzerland where Toronto loaned him to Lausanne HC back in October. Malgin has done fairly well for the Swiss club scoring 22 points in 19 games, as per the team website lausannehc.ch. It seems Malgin will likely not be on the team this year although they do have the option of retaining him on the taxi squad. If I were a betting man, I would say Malgin remains in Switzerland for the remainder of the season barring some major injury issues for the Leafs.
Malgin would have needed to be in quarantine upon arriving to Toronto and considering how likely it is that he would make the team Dubas may have deemed it unnecessary to take him away from Lausanne. The Leafs have so much depth at forward that a player like Malgin will not be missed. The Leafs potential 4th line has several NHL caliber players battling for ice time so Malgin may be better off dominating in the Swiss League this year.
All in all, not the most exciting day of camp, but at this point, any Leafs news is good news.
