Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner was trending on Twitter Thursday night because of the weather.

Yes, you read that right about Toronto Maple Leafs star winger Mitch Marner. Some people online are freaking out because he’d rather play somewhere warm right now.

If you could choose between a dark cold day in Toronto or a warm day on the beach, what would you choose? Hmmm, I can’t answer this quick enough. Give me a beach towel and a cold drink immediately.

When it comes to winter weather, the nicest people in the world (Canadians) turn into monsters. They are so protective of the True White North, and I don’t understand why. I’ve lived in the Toronto area my entire life and although I hope for a Winter Wonderland during the holidays, I’d prefer being warm.

Also, as we currently live in a pandemic, I’d rather go for a walk outside, instead of literally being stuck in my apartment for days. A sunny day brings you so much more energy and happiness, where these dark days that are too cold to go outside are eerily depressing.

If you haven’t read exactly what made Marner trend yet, here’s his full quote via Luke Fox on Twitter:

“That’s the first time I’m hearing of it. But as long as I could bring my family with me, my dog and my girlfriend, then [it’d be fine]. I think everyone is wanting to bring their family wherever they go. It’d be a long time without seeing anyone in your family or people close to you. So I think, if they have that in play and make sure that we’re staying safe and smart during the time, then I think I would be OK with it. Hopefully it’s somewhere warm. It’s kinda chilly right now here in Ontario. So hopefully if that happens, we get somewhere nice and warm and kind of enjoy the weather a little bit more.”

Marner’s Comment Trends on Twitter

If you’re curious why Marner said this, he was answering a question about the possibility of playing in the United States this season.

Essentially all he said was this: “Toronto is cold and I’d rather play somewhere warm if I can.”

But here’s how a few people responded:

If I was making $11 dollars per year or $11 million per year in any occupation, I’d rather do it in a warm climate. Sure, playing hockey in the winter is awesome, but you know what’s better than that? Wearing flip-flops to the rink, or having a summer that lasts more than five months.

Marner’s not saying he hates Toronto, hates playing here, or even saying he hates the weather. It’s just that it’s a little cold and warm weather is better. The fact that people commented with anything other than a ‘thumbs up’ blows my mind, but that’s the market we live in.

I can’t wait for hockey to actually start, so we can focus on something other than the weather.
