2. Most Goals by a Maple Leafs Defensemen (Morgan Rielly)

2019-20 stats – 47 GP – 3 G – 24 A – 27 PTS – 51.5% CF%

Career stats – 517 GP – 54 G – 216 A – 270 PTS – 50.1% CF%

It shouldn’t be a surprise that I have chosen Rielly for this record as we should all know by now that he had an insane 2018-19 season putting up 72 points in 82 games and that 20 of those points were goals. He has already broken the 20 goal mark once in his career and the current Toronto Maple Leafs record is 22 goals which is currently held by not one but two defensemen, Ian Turnbull in 1976-77 and Al Iafrate in 1987-88.

Rielly was already oh so close from breaking this record back during the 2018-19 season, however he fell short by only two goals.  This past season, he admitted to playing injured and he still managed to put up 27 points in 47 games, he then injured his leg against Florida in January which sidelined him for a couple months. I think it’s reasonable to say we might see a similar Morgan Rielly this coming season as we did during the 2018-19 season for more than one reason.

First of all he will be healthy, healed up and ready for the start of the new season. Second of all, he finally has someone worthy of playing on a top pairing as his partner (the newly acquired TJ Brodie). I think its okay to say he can definitely break the record of 22 goals if there is indeed a full season. With Brodie as his partner it will allow him to jump up in the rush more often now and he will more than likely get back to playing on the first power play unit now since Tyson Barrie is gone. (Stats from Hockey-Reference.com)
