The Toronto Maple Leafs, like the rest of the NHL, haven’t played a game since mid-March.

Will the Toronto Maple Leafs play again this year? Will the NHL resume operations?

According to recent rumours, it is a distinct possibility.

The NHL has said all along that they plan to resume operations and finish this season, but no plan has been publicly announced.

There is no safe way in which the NHL can resume in the coming months, at least not in the way in which we are accustomed to.

Solutions have been sought, and one rumour is that the NHL would play their games at a neutral site, without fans,  while basically quarantining the players in a hotel between games.

Is this possible? Is it ethical?  Who knows?

But the rumour is that hockey is coming back soon.

NHL to Resume Season?

Former NHL player John Scott tweeted this out Friday night:

This was also touched upon by NHL rumour master Eklund, who also wrote Friday about the NHL possibly resuming training camps in June.

It would obviously be amazing if the season were to be salvaged, but we really have to hope that the NHL puts the safety of its players and fans ahead of the potential to make money.

I want a season as much as anyone, but I don’t want one that takes unnecessary risks to make it happen.

At the end of the day, if nothing else, the recent global health crisis has shown how unimportant the athletes we hold up as celebrities truly are.

We pay them more than doctors, a fact which now seems obscene.

We don’t want to do it, but we can live without hockey if we have to.

It’s nice to think the games might soon resume, but the logistics seem challenging.

Fans certainly can’t be in attendance.  Flying everyone all around the country seems like a very bad idea, and NHL games can’t be held with less than 50 people.

There are almost that many just between the teams’ players and coaches.  Then you’ve got to have GM’s, scouts, doctors, trainers, TV personalities, camera men, league officials and whoever else.

I am very excited at the possibility of hockey coming back, but at the same time, I remain skeptical that it’s a good idea at this point.

Then again, I am not  doctor.

If a training camp gets underway in June, you have to figure they’d be looking at starting games in the middle of the month, so that’s just under two months from now.

Who knows how things will look then?

I hope this rumour turns out to be true because I very much want the Toronto Maple Leafs season to resume.

But I only want that if it’s safe for everyone involved and not just a desperate cash grab.
