The Toronto Maple Leafs just resigned one of their most promising young players

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a knack for scouting and developing offensive talent, and one of the most recent players to turn the head this season is Pierre Engvall.

It was announced via the Twitter Wednesday afternoon that The Toronto Maple Leafs extended Pierre Engvall on a two-year, $2.5 million deal, which will likely go down as yet another great decision made this year by GM Kyle Dubas.

Engvall was drafted in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, 188th overall, and joined a list of six different players this season who were drafted by Toronto later than the fifth round within the past decade to have spent time in the NHL.

This list includes two other players currently on the Leafs in Andreas Johnsson (7th Rd, 202 OVR), and Dmytro Timashov (5th Rd, 125 OVR).

Engvall has 14 points through 35 games with the Maple Leafs this season, and the 23-year-old has shown the athletic potential to become an integral part of this team’s future. Engvall is deceptively fast, and also has a strong hockey IQ, which are two aspects that only get better with more time spent in the NHL.

This signing also attributes to the long list of players who have gone through the Marlies organization and have gained the potential to become seriously skilled NHL players.

As Sheldon Keefe and the rest of the training staff continue to bring up the players they know and believe are NHL-ready, the Toronto Maple Leafs are proving why they are one of the deepest organizations in the NHL.

This adds to a long list of great managerial decisions made by Kyle Dubas this season, with the recent acquisition of Kyle Clifford and Jack Campbell, as well as the contract extension of Justin Holl earlier this year, and this will likely go down as a hugely underrated signing.

For a team that has spent big on their elite players, it is essential for the Leafs to find value in players like Engvall who don’t play for much beyond the league minimum.

Pierre Engvall has become a huge part of this Toronto Maple Leafs roster, becoming a complimentary winger to any of the top nine forwards, and will surely be a good asset for years to come.
