The Toronto Maple Leafs lost last night to the Florida Panthers.

It was, perhaps, the biggest game of the year for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they did not come through.

Of course, they played one of their best games of the season, but the results did not go there way.  That’s how she goes sometimes.

Contributing greatly to this undeserved loss was the injury suffered to Freddie Andresen in the first period of the game.

Toronto Maple Leafs Goalie Problems

The Toronto Maple Leafs are ranked 25th in the NHL in 5v5 goaltending this year.  Andersen’s worst NHL season to date has been one of the main reasons for their current position in the league standings.

Despite his rough season, Andersen is an elite goalie and the Toronto Maple Leafs can’t afford to go without him for any stretch of games.

The good news is that he did return to the game briefly after his injury, and Sheldon Keefe put a positive spin on things after the game.

Therefore it is our hope that the recall of Kasimir Kaskisuo is just for precautionary reasons.

The bad news here is that Michael Hutchinson is ranked ahead of this guy on the depth chart.

The good news, is that it will be hard for anyone to do as bad as Andersen and Hutchinson have combined to do for this season so far anyway.

If Andersen is out for any length of time, the Leafs will likely pursue a goalie.

They probably should anyways.

Then again, goalies are a complete crapshoot.

For instance, last year prior to his record setting run and Stanley Cup victory, Jordan Binnington was ranked lower than now out of the NHL Garrett Sparks.

Current Vezina front runner Tristen Jarry was available, I believe,  on waivers earlier in the year.

Pior to his injury,  Darcy Kuemper was the Vezina front runner, and he was a career back-up who was on waivers several times.

Another team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, are threatening to make the playoffs with one of the worst rosters ever to do so because goalies Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo are combining to have a Vezina Worth Season.

These are guys whose own mothers may have trouble recognizing in the street.

My point here is that NHL goalies are completely random and for all we know the Leafs just called up the savior to their season.

We could all be wearing matching Kaskisuo jerseys by the end of the month.  At the very least we’ll probably learn how to spell his name.

Andersen probably isn’t hurt badly.  Hopefully he’s back soon.  But with NHL goalies, you never do know.
