It could finally be happening, the Toronto Maple Leafs could name a captain this week.
Since the start of training camp, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been trolling and teasing everyone in regards to the Leafs captaincy.
It could all finally come to an end, right before the season starts.
Or like coach Mike Babcock said on Friday after practice, “before December 25th (Christmas), I promise.”
Once the team announces the captaincy, everything changes, even if you think it won’t. This player will always talk to the media and they will have the spotlight on them always.
But, players on the team have said over and over, it won’t likely affect the roles within the dressing room.
How it’s announced?
There are two ways the Toronto Maple Leafs can announce the captaincy. They could do it the more ‘original’ way, or they could make it fun.
The team could hold a press conference, and announce it there, which is the probably what they’re going to do.
Or, the much more fun way – on opening night. Just think, announcing it during the player introductions, and how it would sound:
“From Mississauga Ontario, the new captain of your Toronto Maple Leafs, number 91, John Tavares!”
“From Vancouver British Columbia, the new captain of your Toronto Maple Leafs, number 44, Morgan Rielly!”
Since the Leafs have been teasing the captaincy, I think they could go down the home opener route. I would think more Leaf fans would want that, rather than the average announcement.
The element of surprise is much more fun, plus it would make the home opener that much more fun to watch. Do you know how many people would tune in if the Leafs said they were announcing the captain during player introductions?
A lot.
They could do more with it, too. With the ice projection, they could incorporate the history of the captaincy, along with videos of each captain there’s been on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It would be much more fun this way, than to just announce it at a press conference. There’d be no hype around it, nor would there be any excitement.
Yes – the element of surprise would still be there, but that would be it. Do a press conference, and there, you’re done.
I just really hope that nobody within the organization leaks the captaincy. There have been reports of Brendan Shanahan wanting Auston Matthews, Kyle Dubas wanting Tavares, but I don’t want to hear about any of it.
The best way to do it, is on opening night. No press conference. No announcement. Be different Toronto, it’s the best way to be.
